Biography

Galgallo Roba Guyo is a dedicated advocate for environmental conservation, cultural heritage preservation, and community empowerment.

As the Founder and Director of Marsabit Botanical Garden, the first of its kind in Northern Kenya among Pastoralist Communities, he leads initiatives in various domains, including environmental conservation, climate change education
and adaptation, ethno-botanical research, agroecology, and the documentation of traditional knowledge of herbal medicine and genetic resources.

Recently, NIPO has evolved from Marsabit Botanical Garden, Indigenous Community Support Program, and Marsabit Indigenous Peoples Cultural Heritage Museum.

As the Founder and Director of Marsabit Botanical Garden, the first of its kind in Northern Kenya among Pastoralist Communities, he leads initiatives in various domains, including environmental conservation, climate change education
and adaptation, ethno-botanical research, agroecology, and the documentation of traditional knowledge of herbal medicine and genetic resources.

Recently, NIPO has evolved from Marsabit Botanical Garden, Indigenous Community Support Program, and Marsabit Indigenous Peoples Cultural Heritage Museum.

Professional and Community Leadership:

Galgallo is the founder of the Indigenous Community Support Program (ICSP), a Community-Based Organization working with Waata and Borana People in Marsabit County.

ICSP focuses on the protection and promotion of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, the development of Biocultural Community Protocols (BCP), community land rights, and women’s empowerment.

He is also the founder of Marsabit Indigenous Peoples Cultural Heritage Museum, an initiative dedicated to the protection, promotion, and documentation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage belonging to the fourteen ethnic communities residing in Marsabit County.

Active Participation in Capacity Building and Forums:

Galgallo’s active role and creativity in community development have earned him invitations to numerous capacity-building forums, conferences, hybrid meetings, and webinars on culture, biodiversity, agroecology, climate change, genetic resources, ethno-botany, and policies.

Noteworthy engagements include participation in UNEA 5:1 as the representative of IPLCs, attendance at the Society of Economic Botany Symposium at the University of Nairobi, and participation in the International Conference of Hunters and Gatherers (CHAGS 13) in Dublin, Ireland.

Training and Accreditation:

Galgallo has undergone diverse training sessions, including UN Mechanisms of Indigenous People and Local Community (IPLCs), UNFCC on Climate Change, Digital Literacy for Youths, and UNESCO training for Youths on Cultural Heritage Convention. His commitment is further demonstrated by his accreditation by the Secretariat of Convention on Biological Diversity to attend the working group meeting of Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

Membership and Affiliations:

Galgallo is an active member of numerous professional bodies and networks, showcasing his commitment to global and local initiatives. Notable affiliations include membership in the Climate Change Alliance of Botanic Garden, International Society of Economic Botany, Global Youths Biodiversity Network, and many more.

Galgallo Roba Guyo’s extensive involvement in various spheres underscores his dedication to creating positive and sustainable change within communities, combining cultural preservation with environmental stewardship.
