New Books Spotlight
Exciting news! We’re thrilled to introduce two compelling new books that speak to the close relationship between humans and our environment.

Tao of Anthropocene by Dr. Steven H. Miles, M.D. and Master Gardener, discusses how the Tao Te Ching, written in 400 BC, emphasizes the interconnectedness of life, predicting disasters if humanity disrupts nature’s unity. The book identifies the Anthropocene Epoch which is characterized by environmental crises like global warming, rising seas, intensifying storms, and droughts alongside mass extinctions. It highlights the Tao’s three Treasures: loving respect for nature, simplicity, and justice as ways to avert ecological disasters. Through personal narratives about his gardens and reflections on Tao Te Ching, Miles advocates for sustainable living in harmony with nature.

A Forest Journey; The Role of Trees in the Fate of Civilization shows the loss of a third of the world’s forests since civilization began 5,000 years ago. The BBC praises the book for its imaginative historical overview, presenting a pattern where civilizations rise and fall due to their use of forest resources. John Perlin argues that the depletion of forests leads to the downfall of civilizations, which are then replaced by new ones near untouched forests.
